Let’s begin with cleaning up and setting up your space.

Pick a space in your home where you can have at least 30 minutes of no or minimal interruptions. Then clean up or declutter your space to prevent any distractions, a decluttered space allows you to focus on the task at hand and helps you feel accomplished. Next, either dim your lights or turn on a table lamp. We want to prevent bright overhead lights and create a space that is relaxing and not over stimulating. Every night I turn all of my lights off and turn the tv on to some mediation, relaxing music found on youtube to help give the right energy to the space.

Once your space is set up, this simple night routine can improve the quality of your sleep and help you feel refreshed the next morning. This is my 10, 10. 10 night routine method. Spend a minimum of 10 minutes on each activity discussed below to get the best results. All you need is 30 minutes, you can expand the time if you like and some nights you may have more time to spend on this routine compared to other nights. I start my night routine at 8:30 in the evening, right after I put my son down to sleep and everyone in the house is off to bed.

  1. Light Body Movement - Stretching, yoga or meditate

Lay out your yoga mat or plant yourself on a  comfortable surface for you to do some light body movement. The reason why light body movement is suggested, is because having an intense workout at night will give you a boost of energy and alertness, making it difficult for you get some sleep. A light stretch, yoga routine or meditation will help ease the body from any tension and stress that is stored throughout the day. Give yourself at least 10 minutes of movement and see how different your body feels once completed.

2.
Journaling, drawing or a writing exercise

Complete an exercise where you are allowing your thoughts to be transferred onto a piece of paper. Release your mind from any negative thoughts or any intense emotions you experienced or carried throughout the day. In this exercise you give yourself 10 minutes to write down anything you don’t want to carry into the next day. If you are able to physically release this with pen and paper, it no longer becomes part of you but apart from you.

Here are some writing and art therapy journals that will provide different forms of self-expression

3. Read a good positive book

Having a positive read right before bed allows you to refuel your mind and spirit with good energy and high vibrations. You learn techniques and skills that will help you redirect your focus and your thoughts. What we do right before bed becomes part of our sub consciousness and can impact how we tackle the day ahead. Refuel your mind, body and spirit with positive thoughts and healing words.
