Accent Wall Decor - Do’s and Dont’s

Blank Wall decor design tips

Heyy! Let’s discuss the do’s and don’s to Accent Wall Decor. How to truly design a blank wall and how much decor is truly needed to complete the right look?

An accent wall is a wall that is usually blank and in need of some decor or a pop of color to make it stand out or feel cohesive to the home. Sometimes there is that one wall that just needs some love and TLC, but we may be stuck on where to start. This can even be known as an open space or gap between rooms, mostly seen in open concept designed homes. You will know a blank wall when you see one, it will be noticeable and your home may even feel incomplete.

Just look at a blank wall like a blank canvas and use it to make a statement. Depending on where this wall is located, the statement can be as big or neutral as you like. Lets start with the Do’s of a blank wall and on creating an Accent wall.

Do - Utilize at minimum, half of the wall with decor or furniture pieces!

The reason behind this method, is to have a wall that feels complete. Adding just one picture frame to a blank wall, will still keep the space from feeling cohesive with the rest of the home. If the goal is to create an accent wall, than we need to add layers of decor, furniture and color. The combination of the three, will move your wall from basic to extraordinary! That may be a bit dramatic but it will definitely make a statement and your wall will no longer feel blank.

How to decorate a narrow wall

Narrow Wall Decor Ideas

Now that we understand the importance of the amount of wall we want to cover, next its important to understand the size of the wall. Is the empty wall more narrow or wide. This is definitely important to know because how each wall is decorated and accessorized will differ. Decorating a narrow wall, will mean you will decorate half of the wall from top to bottom. Ultimately in a narrow space, our eyes are driven up and downwards, which is exactly how we want to decorate. In the image shown above, you can seen that the art work is above the table, which draws your eyes upwards. This can be done in multiple ways like adding a narrow mirror or placing shelves above a console table. The ultimate goal is to draw your eyes upwards.

How to Decorate a Wide Wall

Wide Wall Decor Ideas

When decorating a wide wall, we want to do the opposite. Instead of decorating upwards, we want to focus on decorating across the wall in a horizontal method. Naturally, your eyes will move along horizontally and this is where our focus needs to be. In this case, because the wall is wider, furniture pieces can help break up the space. If it’s a long hallway and if the space allows for it, a bench or long console table will quickly fill up the space. If the walkway is narrow and the wall is wide, a beautiful wall gallery will suffice. Another decor tip, is to create a start and end to the space, this can be done with wall sconces or hanging wall planters. This can truly define the space and give it the perfect touch of dimension and contrast the space needs.

Why you need to add layers to your blank wall ?

It’s not only important to decorate your blank wall but just as important to layer your decor. This means, you should add different textures, dimensions (which means to utilize different sizes and shapes of decor pieces) and add a variation of color. The last thing you want to do is understand how you should decorate but realize that you did not get the right decor pieces for the space. If this is a new project for you, I suggest to utilize at least 2 to 3 different colors with your decor items. The colors should complement each other but also have some type of variation, this is important! You don’t want a monochromatic space, sometimes accent decor pieces can be expensive and its important that they are showcased correctly. A monochromatic space can sometimes feel flat and I know how many of us love neutrals but utilize the different shades of neutrals to create a space that truly stands out!

Don’t Be Afraid to create an accent wall with color, wood paneling or wallpaper.

The best way to decorate a blank wall is to define the space completely and this can be accomplished by adding wallpaper, wood paneling or a pop of color. If this is the route you choose to go in, than one thing I can suggest, is less is more when it comes to decor. The reason less is more is because the whole wall will be decorated in one of the three ways I suggested above. Don’t be afraid to try this out in your home and see how it can completely transform the overall look of the space.

Are you still unsure of how to decorate your blank wall, how to add decor pieces or why you need at least three colors to help define a space?
